Route Description

here is a more detailed description of how and where we plan to cycle. remember that we plan the specific route and the daily portions together DURING the tour. so most of this here is just rough plans and suggestions!
if you join the tour between projects make sure to contact the active group to find out where exactly we are.

the average cycling distance per day this year is around 60-65km. this is a bit more than last year but we also expect a lot less hills/mountains (most of this year’s route should be pretty flat).

Helsinki – Turku

from Helsinki to Turku we plan to mostly follow the eurovelo 10 along the south coast of finland.

we will most likely pass by the towns Kirkkonummi, Tammisaari and Salo, among others.

you can check out the eurovelo in more detail here

Turku – Tampere

from Turku we plan to head north to lake Pyhäjärvi, turn north-east from there and then follow some more rivers and lakes along their north shores to Tampere.

we will most likely pass by the towns

Yläne, Huittinen, Äetsä, Sastamala and Karkku, among others.

Tampere – Tallinn

from Tampere we will go south, trying to pick a quiet and laky route east of highway 3.

we will most likely pass by the towns Pälkäne, Tuulos, Järvelä and Mäntsälä, among others.

on our last day of this etappe we will have to pass through helsinki again and take a 2-3 hour ferry to Tallinn.

Tallinn – Massia

from Tallinn we will dive straight into the countryside of estonia. first we plan to head towards Tartu (although we will avoid the city itself), to pass by the historical bicycle museum in Väätsa and to cycle through the Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve if possible. then we plan to cycle around the southern half of lake Võrtsjärv and aftwerwards turn west to go through the huge Soomaa National Park.

from there we will either cycle along the coast or the countryside next to it towards Massia.

Massia – Saugus Atsumas

from Massia we plan to turn south-east and go through the latvian countryside. we will be heading towards the Lubāna Mitrājs Nature Reserve and Rāznas National Park, which we both want to visit. shortly after entering latvia the group can decide if they want to also make a detour to Gauja National Park, which might be more touristy, but still beautiful.

Avoiding to go straight through the city Daugavpils, we will pass it on the west side and soon reach Saugus Atsumas.

Saugus Atsumas – Riga

we do a bit of a zig-zag course this year. having just arrived in lithuania we will turn back north now to enter again into latvia, and then head north-west towards Riga.

we will most likely pass by the towns Kupiškis, Suvainiškis, a big portion of sparsely (human-)populated nature and Baldone, among others.

—-

Riga – Liepāja

from Riga to Liepāja we will take the coastal route again. the group can decide if they want to cut a part of it shorter and go through some forests and nature parks or if they want to follow the coast all the way.

there is also the option to follow the eurovelo 10 here again, which has a bit of both (coast & countryside) but is not fully develoved in this region.

you can check out the eurovelo in more detail here

Liepāja – Vilnius

from Liepāja we plan to first head south, turning away from the coast just before the city Klaipėda. we recommend having a rest day somewhere around there so that those who want to see the Curonian Split can make it a day trip. then the tour will continue in a south-eastern direction, passing north of Kaunas and maybe making a little loop above Vilnius to visit some more Nature Parks – depending on our energy and motivation.

we will most likely pass by the towns Palanga, Varniai, Lyudvėnai and Jonava among others.

Vilnius – Diggers

from vilnius we plan to turn south-west for the last part of ecotopia 2024. we might cycle through Dzūkijos National Park before leaving lithunia behind. in poland there is the Biebrzański National Park we can go through if the group is motivated.
